[edit]Features

Writer is capable of opening and saving documents in a number of formats, including the OASIS Open Document Format (its default format as of version 2.0), Microsoft Word's DOC, RTF and XHTML.
Writer provides a number of features not present in Word, including the ability to export to the PDF format natively.
[edit]Criticism

Though OpenOffice.org Writer has a spell checker, it has been criticized for lacking a grammar checker, which Abiword, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, and other word processors have. Writer's mail merge functions, drastically rewritten with 2.0, are still less flexible and less stable than other word processors.[1]
Writer has also been criticized for lacking a normal view editing mode, where borders, space between pages, and some formatting is hidden in order to improve productivity when editing long texts. This is often mentioned as a serious impediment for the adoption of OpenOffice.org.[2]
